Most kids' rooms have a spot like this. A stretch of wall that's too small for the bookcase you can buy, too deep to leave alone, and somehow always covered in toys anyway.
That was the situation in this Calgary bedroom: a nook between the window and the door, wide enough to matter, but framed on both sides so anything going in had to fit exactly. The family had measured it more than once. Nothing they could order fit.
The Space That Didn't Fit Anything
Off-the-shelf furniture assumes a standard wall. This wasn't one.
The alcove was too narrow for any ready-made bookcase the family could find. The units that came close were the wrong depth, and sizing down meant leaving gaps on both sides — gaps that would do nothing except collect stray socks and Lego.

Floating shelves were the other obvious option, and they would have technically fit. But the alcove was deep, and shelves only use few inches of that depth. Most of the space would have kept doing what it was already doing: nothing.
So the family was stuck between two half-solutions. That's usually the moment a custom built-in earns its keep — not because custom is fancier, but because the piece gets designed around the space instead of the other way around.
Why a Custom Built-In Made Sense Here
A custom built-in starts from the actual measurements of the actual wall. Width, depth, ceiling height, baseboard profile — all of it goes into the design before anything is cut.
The result in this room is a piece that fills the nook edge to edge and floor to ceiling. No gaps to vacuum around. No wasted depth. And because it's built in rather than pushed in, it reads like it came with the room — as if the house was framed with this exact storage wall in mind.
That's the quiet advantage of custom built-ins and cabinets: they don't have to look like furniture that arrived later.
The Build: Two Depths Doing Two Jobs
The design splits the alcove into a deeper base and a shallower upper library, because toy storage and display storage need different things.
The base cabinet is 19 inches deep. That depth is what makes real storage possible. It allowed for a bank of three full-sized drawers, plus a door section with an adjustable shelf — sized so the bigger toy boxes slide in whole. That detail matters more than it sounds. Cleanup in a kids' room works when the container goes away, not the individual pieces. Bin in, door closed, done.
The upper library is 12 inches deep, with three adjustable shelves. That's the right depth for books, picture frames, and the small souvenirs that accumulate through childhood. Deep enough that books sit fully supported; shallow enough that nothing disappears into a back row.
The step between the two depths creates a ledge on top of the base cabinet — a natural landing spot for whatever is currently important, which in a kids' room changes weekly.
The arch above ties it together. Framing the top of the built-in with an arch was a small design move with an outsized effect: it makes the alcove read deeper and more intentional — less like a filled-in niche, more like part of the room's original architecture. The brass light above the arch finishes it, giving the shelves a warm wash in the evening.

Shelf spacing in the upper library follows the same thinking as our custom shelving and bookcase builds: set around what's actually going on the shelves, and adjustable for when that changes.
Materials Chosen for Kids, Not Just for Photos
Every material decision on this project came back to one question: how does this hold up to daily use by a child?
Inside the base cabinet: pre-finished birch. The interior is bright, smooth, and wipeable. Toy bins slide in and out without scuffing, spills wipe up, and the light colour makes it easy to see what's actually in there.
Outside — the doors, drawer faces, and upper library — finished textured panels that mimic natural wood grain. They bring the warmth and texture of real wood, but the finish is far more forgiving than stain or paint. Fingerprints, scuffs from toy corners, the general wear a kid's room hands out daily — it shrugs those off and wipes clean.
Decisions like the 19-inch base depth and the panel finish get made during the 3D rendering design, in step two of our four-step process, before anything reaches the shop.
What Changed in the Room
Nothing dramatic — which is usually the sign of a built-in doing its job.

Not Just for Kids' Rooms
The details here are kid-specific — toy boxes, book heights. The problem isn't. Almost every home has a wall that standard furniture can't use: the nook beside a fireplace, the end of a hallway, the space between two windows, the gap left over after a renovation.
